The organic acid should be neutralized first in order to keep the pH within the appropriate range for the Karl Fischer titration. Strongly basic amines should be neutralized by benzoic acid, while adding chloroform to improve the solubility of high concentration amines.
Petroleum products such as mineral oil contain a very small amount of water, sometimes even in trace amounts. Therefore, we also recommend the Karl Fischer Coulometry to determine its moisture content. Usually mineral oil can only be completely dissolved in the presence of chloroform. When analyzing light mineral oils (benzene, kerosene, diesel or heating oil), chloroform can be replaced by 1-decanol or certain solvents for oils and fats. For the determination of moisture in olefinic gases, the gas can be directly introduced into the titration cell for measurement.
