In a remote corner of the Westman Islands, off the southern coast of Iceland, lies the tiny island of Elliðaey—a place that once thrived with life but now stands as one of the most isolated homes in the world. Recently, a small, weathered house was discovered on this desolate islet, drawing attention from both locals and travelers alike.
Centuries ago, more than 300 people called this island home. They lived in simple huts, relying on fishing, hunting puffins, and raising cattle to survive. However, life far from civilization proved difficult. As time passed, the community gradually declined, and by the 1930s, the last family left, leaving the island completely abandoned—turning it into a true desert island.
But the story didn’t end there. In the decades that followed, some former residents returned, drawn back by the island’s rich natural resources, particularly the puffin population. To accommodate their seasonal hunts, the Elliðaey Hunting Association constructed a small log cabin on the island. This structure became a temporary base for those who wanted to reconnect with their ancestral land.
Today, the lone house stands as a symbol of the island's past and its fleeting connection to human life. While no one lives there permanently anymore, it remains a place of historical interest and quiet beauty. For those fascinated by untouched landscapes and the stories of forgotten places, Elliðaey offers a glimpse into a world where nature has reclaimed what once belonged to people.
