Our commitment to more sustainable packaging and freight

Vikan is deeply committed to embedding sustainable choices and solutions into our daily operations. We understand our responsibility to manage resources efficiently, as highlighted in our latest Progress Reports. Two key areas we are focusing on involve reducing the volume of materials used and cutting down our CO2 emissions. Our emphasis on optimal material utilization involves setting clear goals to decrease the overall amount of packaging material while boosting the use of recycled and recyclable materials. To achieve this, we've invested in a 'Pack Size Machine' capable of cutting cardboard boxes to the exact size needed for each order. This cardboard is FSC-certified, ensuring it comes from responsibly managed forests. Previously, we offered a selection of 10 box sizes, choosing the most suitable for each order. With the new machine, we can now tailor cardboard boxes precisely, minimizing waste and optimizing shipment sizes. This means we're shipping less air and fitting more products into each shipment. In 2023, we also began using recycled plastic bags for our Hygiene product range, which contain 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material. This aligns with our mission to reduce the environmental footprint of our packaging. In terms of reducing CO2 emissions, our strategy revolves around optimizing our transportation methods. Vikan has strategically established regional distribution centers globally, including locations in Canada, the U.S., and following the acquisition of Wells, in Australia and New Zealand. By doing so, we’ve shortened delivery times and reduced the need for direct shipments from our manufacturing plant in Denmark. Instead, we send larger bulk shipments by sea to these regional hubs, allowing for more efficient and shorter-distance transportation to our customers. This has significantly cut down on the reliance on resource-intensive air freight. In 2023, our air freight index was at 70.6 compared to 2022, while sea freight increased slightly to 100.4. Together with the efficiency of our Pack Size Machine, these measures help us uphold our commitment to sustainability by minimizing the carbon footprint of our freight transport. Sustainability is an ongoing journey at Vikan. Our continuous efforts to integrate eco-friendly practices into our business model reflect our dedication to environmental responsibility. Through targeted initiatives like those mentioned, we strive to lessen our environmental impact while maintaining high standards. As we gather and analyze more data, we'll keep updating this blog to share our progress and insights. Recently, we launched the Vikan Hygiene Product Take-Back program to address the environmental challenges posed by disposing of multi-material cleaning tools. Additionally, Amit M. Kheradia shared valuable insights on cross-contamination control strategies, emphasizing the importance of proper plant layout and process control. Debra Smith also contributed with expert advice on hygienic design, answering some of the top questions from our recent webinar. At Vikan, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s a way of life. We’re constantly exploring new ways to improve, and we hope to continue leading the charge in creating a greener future. Stay tuned for more updates as we evolve and adapt to meet the needs of both our planet and our customers.
