The National Furniture Quality Supervision and Inspection Center is part of the Shanghai Quality Supervision and Inspection Technology Research Institute. Established in 1982, it was initially authorized by the Shanghai Technical Supervision Bureau as the Shanghai Furniture Quality Supervision and Inspection Station. In 1983, the center received recognition from the Ministry of Light Industry as the Furniture Quality Supervision and Inspection Center under that ministry. It was officially designated as the National Furniture Quality Supervision and Inspection Center in 1989 by the State Bureau of Technical Supervision. The center also gained approval from the China National Accreditation Board for Laboratories in 1999, becoming an accredited testing laboratory recognized by the China Quality Certification Center. As one of the earliest professional institutions in China, the center has been conducting comprehensive furniture inspections, including testing, standard development, equipment research, and scientific studies. It is widely regarded as the most advanced and well-equipped laboratory in the domestic furniture industry. The center is equipped with over 4 million yuan in fixed assets, including 10 large-scale instruments and a 2000-square-meter laboratory. Its testing equipment covers a wide range of furniture-related standards. This includes physical and chemical testing systems, sofa and mattress testers, color fastness friction instruments, electronic universal testing machines for artificial boards, intelligent climate chambers, atomic absorption spectrophotometers, and visible spectrophotometers. With this extensive setup, the center can conduct all necessary tests according to current furniture standards. The center has authorization to inspect 56 different product categories, such as wood, metal, upholstered, and kitchen furniture, as well as hardware, leather, textiles, and more. Its testing scope covers physical, mechanical, durability, and hazardous substance evaluations. In addition to its testing role, the center serves as the National Furniture Standardization Center. It plays a key role in revising national and industry standards for the furniture sector. As a P member of the ISO/TC136 Furniture Technology Committee, the center has contributed to the drafting of 33 national furniture standards and 32 industry standards. It was among the first in China to introduce international testing methods and standards from ISO and other global organizations.
