In developed countries in Europe and America, the application of in-mold labeling technology has been for many years, and it has gradually entered the track of stable development. Compared with the widely used self-adhesive labels on the market, the labeling effect and performance of the in-mold label are almost perfect. Therefore, the extensive use of the in-mold label and the rapid development of the industry have also driven its production. The products and technologies (including in-mold label materials, printing processes, mold manufacturing and plastic molding equipment) are constantly evolving and further improving. With the emergence of this new packaging form of in-mold labeling in the field of labeling in China, some companies that have the courage to “eat crabs” have used and benefited from it, and more and more companies have begun to pay attention to in-mold labels.

The main process flow for in-mold label printing includes:

(1) Pretreatment of printing materials

In general, in-mold label materials cannot be directly used for digital printing without treatment, which is determined by the characteristics of digital printing inks. Only when the surface tension of the substrate reaches 50 μN/m, the ink adheres well to the surface to achieve a satisfactory printing effect, so digital printing requires corona and coating treatment of the substrate to adjust the surface tension.

(2) Digital printing

The personalized graphic information will be sent to the digital printing machine through the RIP of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and other prepress processing software.

(3) Corona, coating and drying in sequence

After the digital printing is completed, corona and coating treatment must be carried out again, so that the screen printing ink can have strong adhesion on the surface of the digitally printed printing material.

(4) Screen printing

Same as traditional screen printing process and enhanced drying.

(5) Forming

Metal mold molding, vacuum forming, high pressure molding, etc. can be used depending on the type of printing material.

(6) die cutting

The printed substrate is die cut into the desired shape and can be used for in-mold labeling.
