Basic principles of differential thermal analysis

Differential thermal analysis (DTA) is a technique for measuring the temperature difference and temperature (or time) relationship between a substance and a reference at a programmed temperature. The curve describing this relationship is called the differential thermal curve or the DTA curve. Since the temperature difference between the sample and the reference material is mainly determined by the temperature change of the sample, by its very nature, differential thermal analysis is a technique mainly related to the determination of the enthalpy change and thereby understanding the properties of the substance.
