Skin epithelial stem cells can be used to repair the cornea

Limbal stem cell transplantation has long been limited by insufficient donor sources and allogeneic transplant rejection, and does not benefit more patients. The relevant person in charge of the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology at Sun Yat-Sen University revealed in an interview on the 7th that the research published by Sun Yat-Sen University scholars in the journal Nature recently showed that skin epithelial stem cells or other cell types can be quickly and inexpensively obtained. Differentiating and amplifying a sufficient amount of limbal stem cells provides a potential resource for repairing and regenerating the corneal surface and treating patients with limbal stem cell defects.

On July 2, 2014, Nature published a breakthrough in the joint research on stem cell treatment of corneal diseases between China and the United States. It confirmed that WNT7A and PAX6, the key factors regulating limbal stem cell differentiation, play a role in the differentiation of corneal lineage. It plays an important role in the first differentiation of skin stem cells into limbal stem cells and successfully repairs corneal function, pointing out a new strategy for the treatment of corneal diseases.

The main person in charge of the research results, this study will have broad application prospects for the treatment of major diseases caused by impaired limbal stem cell function and repair of postoperative epithelial damage in myopia.
