The newly opened Mathematics Gallery at London's Science Museum is now complete and has been masterfully designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. Known as the Mathematics: The Winton Gallery, this exhibition marks the first UK project by Zaha Hadid Architects following the passing of its iconic founder earlier this year.
This gallery is set to showcase over 100 objects from the museum’s extensive collections in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These exhibits highlight the profound impact of mathematics on various aspects of life, ranging from commerce and travel to architectural innovation.
Hanging dramatically from the ceiling, visitors will discover the source of inspiration behind the gallery’s innovative design: a 1929 Handley Page Gugnunc aircraft. Three-dimensional curves create a dynamic canopy above the space, inspired by the airflow patterns surrounding the aircraft during flight. The translucent, wavy forms are bathed in a soft violet light.
The Gugnunc’s wing design was heavily influenced by aerodynamic research, and serves as a testament to how mathematics can address real-world challenges.
"Envisioned as a wind tunnel for the largest exhibit in the gallery—a 1929 Handley Page aircraft—the space follows the flow of air around it in a visually striking display of imagined aerodynamics," stated ZHA. "Inspired by the Handley Page aircraft, the design is driven by equations used in the aviation industry."
