The newly opened Mathematics Gallery at London's Science Museum has finally been completed and it’s nothing short of spectacular. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the Mathematics: The Winton Gallery is the first UK project by the firm since its iconic founder passed away earlier this year. This groundbreaking exhibition showcases over 100 objects from the museum’s extensive collections of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, highlighting the profound impact of mathematics on our world—ranging from trade and travel to architectural innovation.

One of the most striking features of the gallery is its unique design, inspired by a 1929 Handley Page Gugnunc aircraft suspended from the ceiling. The gallery’s flowing, three-dimensional curves create a mesmerizing canopy over the space, mimicking the airflows that would have surrounded the aircraft during flight. Translucent and undulating, these forms are bathed in a soft violet light, creating an ethereal atmosphere that draws visitors into the heart of the exhibit.

The Gugnunc’s innovative wing design, influenced by aerodynamic research, serves as a powerful metaphor for how mathematics can solve real-world challenges. As Zaha Hadid Architects explained in their official statement, "Conceived as a wind tunnel for the largest object in the gallery—a Handley Page aircraft from 1929—the space follows the lines of airflow around it in a stunning display of imagined aerodynamics."
