BIOGRAPHY
Jean Nouvel was born on August 12, 1945, in Fumel, Lot-et-Garonne, France. He is the son of Renée and Roger Nouvel, both educators. His family moved frequently due to his father’s role as the county’s chief school superintendent. Encouraged by his parents to study mathematics and language, Nouvel developed a passion for art at the age of 16 after being introduced to drawing by a teacher. Although his parents initially wanted him to pursue education or engineering, they eventually agreed to let him study architecture, which they considered less risky than art.
When Nouvel failed the entrance exam for the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, he relocated to Paris, where he won first prize in a national competition to attend the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. From 1967 to 1970, Nouvel worked as an assistant to architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, who soon promoted him to project manager responsible for constructing a large apartment complex.
Nouvel married filmmaker Odile Fillion, and together they had two sons: Bertrand, a post-doctorate computer scientist working at Mindstorm Multitouch in London, and Pierre, a theater producer and designer at his company, Factoid. With his second wife, Catherine Richard, Nouvel has a daughter named Sarah. Currently, he resides in Paris with Mia Hägg, a Swedish architect practicing at her firm Habiter Autrement (HA).
THE PROJECTS
Police Headquarters of Charleroi and Extension of Charleroi Danses
Belgium
On November 14, 2014, Jean Nouvel and Charleroi's mayor, Mr. Paul Magnette, officially opened the new Police Headquarters of Charleroi, designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel and MDW architecture. The project was selected in 2011 following an international competition. Its aim was to create a welcoming image of the police while providing the city with a new urban landmark. The design preserved and restored the two wings of the existing old cavalry barracks and constructed a 75-meter-tall Tower on the freed site. This structure integrates seamlessly into the upper city's urban landscape, engaging in dialogue with the City Hall belfry, becoming a new symbol on the city skyline. The vertical design allowed for the creation of a spacious public square open to the city. Users of the Police Headquarters, Charleroi Danses, and visitors to the future Fine Arts Museum will bring diversity to the area through their movements; they will converge in the new public square and dine at the new brasserie where police and dance will intersect.
One Central Park

Two iconic towers designed by Jean Nouvel for Block 2 of the Frasers Broadway project redefine Sydney's skyline. The development comprises a 34-story residential apartment tower and a 12-story serviced apartment tower set on a shared retail podium. Standing at 130 meters tall, the building serves as the crowning landmark of the multi-building Frasers Broadway project, located on a former brewery site close to the downtown area.
A vertical garden, created in collaboration with French botanist and artist Patrick Blanc, covers approximately 50% of the building’s facade. This verdant design extends the planted area of the adjacent urban park vertically onto the building, creating a vibrant living environment for residents and a striking green icon on the Sydney skyline.

The goal is straightforward yet ambitious: to build the most stunning hotel of our era, dedicated to leisure, sunshine, and the ocean, while reinterpreting the Atlantis theme—mysteries tied to the sea, reclaimed secrets, and mythical sea creatures.
To achieve this, it's crucial in Hainan to distinguish ourselves from neighboring hotels by leveraging our primary advantage: a significantly larger site than others, centrally located within the beach and hotel district. We have the opportunity to dominate this site with monumental architecture, easily recognizable from afar, designed on a grand scale that blends seamlessly with the sky. This architecture should convey its dedication to the sea and evoke a deep connection to the ocean, from the lobby to the rooms, including the restaurants, conference center, and nightclubs.
