Flash Fusion Frequency Meter / Highlight Scintillator Information

The Flash Fusion Frequency Meter, also known as the Bright Spot Scintillator (Model: HA/BD-II-118), is a specialized instrument used to measure the critical frequency at which a flickering light transitions into a steady, non-flickering perception. This phenomenon, called "flash fusion," occurs when the human eye can no longer detect the individual flashes of light and perceives it as continuous illumination. The lowest frequency at which this fusion happens is referred to as the critical fusion frequency (CFF), while the highest frequency at which flicker is still perceived is also measured. Together, these values help assess visual acuity and temporal sensitivity of the visual system. This device is widely used in psychological experiments, personnel selection, and fatigue assessment. It allows researchers to evaluate how factors like color, brightness, background lighting, and contrast affect the CFF. Visual acuity is not only a fundamental aspect of vision but also an indicator of mental and physical fatigue. Studies have shown that individuals with higher CFFs tend to have better cognitive performance, whereas fatigue leads to a decrease in this frequency. The Flash Fusion Frequency Meter offers precise control over various parameters. It features a digital display for accurate frequency settings ranging from 4.0 Hz to 60.0 Hz, with 0.1 Hz increments. Users can adjust the color of the bright spot—available in red, yellow, green, blue, and white—and choose from different brightness levels and contrast ratios. The background light intensity can be adjusted in four stages, including full white, 1/4, 1/16, and completely dark. The instrument is compact, measuring 300 × 150 × 250 mm, and operates on AC 220V ±10%, 50Hz ±1Hz. To use the device, the subject looks through an observation tube while the operator adjusts the frequency using a knob. The test involves gradually increasing or decreasing the flash rate until the subject can no longer perceive the flicker. The recorded frequency provides insight into their visual processing speed and overall alertness. Repeating the test around the fusion point helps ensure accuracy. Proper maintenance is essential. The instrument should be kept in a dry and well-ventilated area. If unused for long periods, it should be powered on for at least four hours every three months. In high humidity environments, it should be powered on more frequently to prevent internal damage. Always check the power connections and voltage supply before starting the test. With its user-friendly design and high precision, this device remains a valuable tool in both research and practical applications.
