AkzoNobel Develops a Photosensitive Coating Composition

AkzoNobel Co., Ltd. developed a photosensitive coating composition in December 2003 that can be used for surface coatings that can be processed quickly at room temperature. Photosensitive coating compositions comprising (A) a compound containing an activated unsaturated group, (B) a compound containing an activated CH group such as an oligomeric or polymeric malonate compound and/or an acetoacetate group The compound, (C) one or more Lewis bases or Bronsted bases (the latter have a pKa of at least 10, such as 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undecyl A catalyst in the form of -7-ene), and (D) a photoinitiator wherein the photoinitiator is a photolatent base. Preferred is a coating composition wherein the photolatent base is an [alpha]-aminoalkene of structure (I) wherein R#-[16] is phenyl; R#-[17] and R#-[18] are hydrogen Or methyl; R#-[19] and R#-[21] together form C#-[3] alkylene bridge; R#-[20] and R#-[22] together form C#-[3] The alkyl bridges; R#-[31] and R#-[32] are hydrogen. The composition may also comprise a sensitizer selected from thioxanthone, oxazine, rhodamine, coumarin, and preferably selected from benzophenone and derivatives thereof.
