Antibacterial stainless steel successfully developed in Shenyang

The research group headed by Yang Ke, a researcher at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has successfully developed a new type of antibacterial stainless steel that combines the functions of structure, corrosion resistance and antibacterial functions. It has passed the identification of scientific and technological achievements organized by the Shenyang Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology.
At present, this research group has developed two types of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels, and carried out an expansion test at Dalian Special Steel Co., Ltd., and trial-produced a variety of antibacterial stainless steel sheets, pipes, castings and welding parts. After testing, the antibacterial stainless steel has a killing rate of 99% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. It also has a significant killing effect against other bacteria such as Candida albicans and Black rot bacteria, showing excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and Antibacterial durability. According to tests conducted by the National Institute of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products, the antibacterial stainless steel completely complied with national technical standards in terms of toxicity and human safety. While imparting antibacterial properties to stainless steel, the mechanical, corrosion resistance, hot and cold processing, and welding properties of the material are comparable to those of the original stainless steel.
Although antibacterial stainless steels have been developed internationally before, China has not made any breakthrough in this regard. The successful development of antibacterial stainless steel provides a broad space for the development of antibacterial products. The development potential of antibacterial stainless steel products is huge and the market prospect is extremely broad. At present, many domestic manufacturers have expressed strong interest in antibacterial stainless steel, and the research group is actively seeking to bring this achievement into commercial production as soon as possible.
