Fluoropolymers for barrier bottles

Honeywell's Aclon polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) resin is the new choice for barrier resins for multilayer bottles and single or coextrusion tubes. Aclon is a semi-crystalline material that was previously used as Aclar film. The main advantage of this material is high transparency and 10 times higher moisture resistance than other transparent thermoplastics. There are two grades available: Aclon 1090 is a homopolymer with a density of 2.144 g/cm3. It is used as a barrier for moisture-sensitive drugs, chemicals, and personal care bottles. Honeywell recommends the use of adhesive resin for Aclon and PE. Or PP connection. Aclon 5120 is a copolymer with vinylidene fluoride to increase softness and heat sealability. It has improved barrier properties to chemicals and a slightly lower barrier to moisture. Potential uses include automotive fuel pipes and chemical transportation. The molten Alcon is sensitive to shear and has a narrow processing range. The barrel temperature must be between 260 and 302 °C. The process requires the use of corrosion-resistant screws and barrels, as well as chrome-plated die heads.
