3D printing portraits break the Guinness World Record!

As we all know, breaking the world record is a very difficult thing, but it always attracts countless people to go on and on. The current Guinness World Record for the highest 3D printed reality statue is 2 meters, but just two days ago, this record was broken by the Backface, a 3D printing startup in Birmingham, England. The company is the fifth channel, The Gadget Show. The show host Jon Bentley 3D printed a statue of up to 2.05 meters, which was also shown on Friday's "The Gadget Show" show.

Backface is a startup from Birmingham that uses 3D printing and 3D scanning technology to create creative projects for its clients. The company has been operating for less than two years. When it comes to the reason for challenging the Guinness Book of World Records, the company explained: “We received the challenge of the most popular TV show The Gadget Show, which broke the Guinness World for the highest 3D printed portrait. Record. We are not the guys who evade the challenge, naturally we have to say - YES!" they recalled.

It is understood that in fact, the first step of this record-breaking project is very simple. Backface has high-quality 3D scanning equipment, and Jon Bentley has taken a look at the company's studio for careful 3D scanning. “When scanning, we used a custom photogrammetric rack with 96 18-megapixel SLR cameras installed. These cameras were shot at Jon at the same time, generating more than 40 million points of point cloud data. Then we convert it into an OBJ+ texture file,” the company said.

After the scan is complete, the company's artist selects the best pose and then re-edits the model to make it easier for 3D printing. “We cleaned and detailed the scan data in the ZBrush software. Since the object was significantly larger than our usual model, we spent a day cleaning and detailing, and also made several smaller test prints, and Checked the color of some parts and helped us to digitize the model (for 3D printing)," they revealed.

All of the above work is fine. In fact, the challenges faced by the production team in the 3D printing phase have just begun. A large number of print jobs took about a month to complete (the machine worked almost 24 hours a day), and the entire model was divided into 30 parts for full color printing. The production team used the ProJet 660 3D printer and Gypsum composite. The entire model includes more than 50,000 print layers (each layer is 100 microns thick). Due to the high print resolution, the connection is almost invisible. In addition, in order to facilitate transportation, the model is also hollow, and the various components are stationed together by glue.

But since this is the official test of the Guinness World Record, the production team itself is not counted in the workshop. To this end, the company held an event at the Birmingham National Exposition Center. The "The Gadget Show" program team was responsible for the filming. The Guinness representative tested the model in the event squadron and was finally identified as creating a new Guinness World Record - The highest 3D printed portrait. The final model is 2.05 meters high from head to toe, 12% larger than the real Jon Bentley and weighs about 15 kg.
