1. Offset

Offset printing is the most widely used printing technology in printing. Offset printing processes and equipment have been developed. The supporting raw and auxiliary materials have also been fully matured. The printing quality is good and the cost is low. Among various printing methods, offset printing is the most ideal method for performing halftone color image reproduction. Its copied images are rich in tone, clear in level, clear in points, color coordinated, real and natural. In the production of printing plates, especially CTP plate making technology, the production technology of offset printing plates is the most mature. Relatively, the offset printing plate making period is short, the efficiency is high, and the cost is low.

But offset printing also has its drawbacks. First of all, the offset printing press and offset printing process are complex, the technical operation is demanding, and in order to obtain a good print, the operator must handle the relationship between offset printing press, printing plate, paper, ink, ink balance and printing environment. Second, offset ink printing is not as thick as gravure and screen printing. Third, the limited printability of offset printing on plastic films (which can now be printed on plastic sheets).

Gravure

Gravure printing is one of the most important printing methods. Printing ink full three-dimensional, stable printing quality, printing plate long life. Suitable for large-volume printing. Gravure printing equipment is simpler than offset printing machines. Can print paper bases and very thin plastic film substrates.

The main disadvantages of gravure printing are: the gravure plate making process is complicated, there are many matching plate making equipments and the price is high. Secondly, and very importantly, most gravure printing inks currently contain benzene, which is harmful to the environment. Ventilation equipment must be installed in the printing shop.

3. Flexo

(1) Wide range of applications and substrates: Flexographic printing covers a wide range of applications. Nearly all prints can be printed. Flexographic materials can be ultra-thin, soft, or rigid films, paper, and cardboard. It can also be rough-surfaced packaging materials and fabrics. Flexo printing is also particularly suitable for the printing of plastic films and corrugated cardboard.

(2) Water-based inks are widely used: Among the various printing methods such as offset printing, gravure printing, flexo printing, screen printing, etc., only flexographic printing currently uses aqueous inks widely. Non-toxic, non-polluting, and favorable for protecting the environment, it is called “green printing” and is particularly suitable for packaging and printing.

(3) The equipment structure is simple, easy to form the production line: the flexo printer structure is relatively simple. Therefore, the production cost and the price of the flexo press are relatively low, and the equipment investment of the printing company is low. Because the equipment is simple, easy to use and easy to repair. At present, the vast majority of flexographic printing presses are linked to processes such as bronzing, glazing, cutting, slitting, die-cutting, creasing, punching, and windowing, or with other printing methods such as gravure and web printing. India, digital printing, etc. form a production line. Greatly improved labor productivity.

(4) Lower printing costs: Flexographic printing costs are low, and there is widespread consensus in foreign countries. There is still controversy in the country. The main reason is that most high-end flexo presses, flexographic printing plates, and flexo printing inks used in domestic flexo printing relies on imports, resulting in higher costs. The cost of gravure printing in this area is relatively low. In addition, in order to compete with flexo printing, gravure printing has to do everything possible to reduce the cost advantage of flexo printing. With the local production of flexographic equipment, its plates and raw materials, its cost will gradually decrease.

Shortcomings

(1) Domestic production of flexographic printing plates and raw and auxiliary materials has a long way to go: Currently, most of them rely on imports. This is an important reason why the current cost of flexo printing is relatively high and the speed of development is slow. The domestic production of flexo presses, especially high-end machines, plates and raw materials, is the key to the rapid development of flexo printing.

(2) Process standardization problem: The flexographic printing process is not mature enough for offset printing and gravure printing. Many domestic flexo workers are not yet familiar with it. This is also an important reason that affects the quality of flexo printing and its development. Due to the wide range of printed products and substrates for flexo printing, the use time is relatively short compared to offset printing and gravure printing. There are many variables affecting flexo printing, and it is difficult to achieve standardization and dataization.
